Cultural Diversity and Self-Directed Learning Cont.

  • According to Hepburn's and Jones' ( 2017) self-determination theory, extrinsic and instrinsic motivation is part of the theory. These two types of motivation exist variably in different cultures. Environmenets that encourage choice and reduce control facilitate autonomy.

  • Students succeed in achieving higher levels of academic performance when they are supported by their teacher to be autonomous learners.

  • Second language learners exert their greatest effort to become " culturally competent" in their new language and environment when their teachers " strive for competence as they share a classroom culture" (p.150)

  • Self-determination skills include self- awareness, goal-setting, problem-solving and self-advocacy.
