According to Hepburn's and Jones' ( 2017) self-determination theory, extrinsic and instrinsic motivation is part of the theory. These two types of motivation exist variably in different cultures. Environmenets that encourage choice and reduce control facilitate autonomy.

Students succeed in achieving higher levels of academic performance when they are supported by their teacher to be autonomous learners.

Second language learners exert their greatest effort to become " culturally competent" in their new language and environment when their teachers " strive for competence as they share a classroom culture" (p.150)

Self-determination skills include self- awareness, goal-setting, problem-solving and self-advocacy.
